A moment in Marine history - Returning from Iwo
The 4th of April 1945. They had left Maui for Iwo on 51 ships. It only took 12 to bring them back. Granted it wasn’t the same mix of ships, but nonetheless it lends some idea to the attrition the 4th Division experienced. Casualties on Iwo numbered 9,098, which was almost half the division strength.
