May we always remember the Marines, Corpsmen, and Sailers who stepped foot on the black sandy beaches of Iwo Jima those 80 years ago who through their raw courage and bravery defeated a formidable enemy. Though ultimately victorious, the American victory at Iwo Jima had been extremely costly. According to the Navy Department Library, the 36-day assault resulted in more than 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 dead May we honor them always.
As one of your FMF Corpsmen and the detachment's Web Sergeant, I recall the 2005 Marine Corps Ball in Coure D Alene, Idaho, when myself and my wife had the honor of sitting next to two Marines who landed on that beach now 80 years ago.
To listen to their stories was such a privilege and a memory that will always be mine.
Always give thanks and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that all could enjoy the freedoms we have
